Drying is not simply what happens after washing. It is the final stage of the garment-care process.
Bras and underwear are often more vulnerable while wet. Water increases the weight of the garment, while cups, straps, elastic, foam, linings and absorbent layers may remain softer, heavier or easier to distort.
Damage can occur when a wet garment is:
- twisted or wrung;
- lifted by one narrow strap;
- left with its cups crushed;
- stretched across a drying rack;
- exposed to unsuitable heat;
- dried in prolonged strong sunlight;
- or stored before its internal layers are completely dry.
A reliable drying process should therefore do five things:
- remove excess free water without unnecessary mechanical stress;
- restore the garment’s natural shape while it is still damp;
- support its wet weight in the correct position;
- use a drying method compatible with the complete care label;
- and leave every layer completely dry before the garment is worn or stored.
Start with the drying symbols on the care label
Washing and drying are separate care decisions.
Permission to machine wash a bra or pair of underwear does not automatically mean that it can be tumble-dried or exposed to another heated-drying process.
On a care label:
- a square represents drying;
- a circle inside the square refers to tumble drying;
- horizontal or vertical lines inside the square describe natural drying;
- and a diagonal line in the corner indicates that the stated natural-drying process should take place in the shade.
Natural-drying instructions may specify:
- line drying;
- drip line drying;
- flat drying;
- or drip flat drying.
The dots inside a tumble-drying symbol indicate the permitted severity of the thermal process. A crossed tumble-drying symbol means that the garment must not be tumble-dried.
The drying decision must apply to the complete garment, not only to its main fibre.
A bra or pair of underwear may contain:
- cotton;
- polyamide;
- polyester;
- elastane;
- silk;
- lace;
- foam;
- elastic bands;
- bonded seams;
- printed details;
- absorbent layers;
- underwires;
- hooks;
- and decorative components.
Any one of these may introduce a stricter drying limit.

Drying begins with the amount of water left after washing
A garment does not move directly from “washed” to “dry”.
It normally passes through several moisture states:
saturated
→ excess water removed
→ damp
→ surface dry
→ completely dry through every layer
The drying method required depends partly on where the garment begins in this sequence.
A hand-washed bra that still contains substantial water may require gentle towel pressing before it can be positioned safely.
A garment that has completed a compatible spin process may already contain less free water, but its fibres, seams, padding or absorbent layers can still remain damp.
This is why spinning, natural drying and heated drying should not be treated as interchangeable terms.
Spinning removes free water but does not complete drying
During spin extraction, the inner basket rotates at speed.
The rotation moves free water away from the garments and through the perforations in the basket. This reduces the residual moisture that the later drying stage needs to remove.
Spinning may:
- shorten natural-drying time;
- reduce the work required during heated drying;
- prevent garments from remaining saturated for longer than necessary;
- and make wet garments easier to lift and reshape.
However, spin extraction does not normally leave every part of a garment completely dry.
Moisture can remain in:
- fibres;
- folded seams;
- foam cups;
- removable pads;
- wide underbands;
- waistbands;
- lined gussets;
- pad pockets;
- bonded areas;
- underwire channels;
- and absorbent layers.
Stronger spinning is not always better for lingerie
A faster or longer spin may remove more free water, but it may also increase mechanical stress.
Possible risks include:
- moulded cups being pressed against the basket;
- padding being displaced;
- straps becoming tangled;
- elastic being pulled unevenly;
- underwires being placed under localised pressure;
- lace or mesh being compressed;
- and layered underwear being forced into a distorted position.
The most intensive available spin should not be used automatically.
The appropriate spin depends on:
- the care label;
- the garment structure;
- the permitted programme;
- the load size;
- and the amount of mechanical protection required.
A controlled spin followed by supported drying may be more appropriate than maximum extraction for a delicate or structured bra.
Remove remaining water without twisting or wringing
Twisting and wringing apply opposing forces to different parts of a wet garment.
On a bra, this may affect:
- the cups;
- centre gore;
- underband;
- side wings;
- straps;
- seams;
- padding;
- and underwires.
On underwear, it may stretch:
- the waistband;
- leg openings;
- gusset;
- bonded layers;
- and absorbent components.
After hand washing, lift the garment with its weight supported.
When additional water needs to be removed:
- allow loose water to drain;
- hold the garment in its natural shape;
- place it on a clean, dry, colourfast towel;
- fold the towel gently over the garment;
- and press without twisting.
Do not tightly roll a moulded bra inside the towel. The aim is to absorb water, not compress the cups into a smaller shape.
Do not pull a saturated garment from a basin by:
- one shoulder strap;
- one cup edge;
- one lace panel;
- or one narrow section of waistband.
Reshape bras and underwear while they are damp
Do not wait until a garment is fully dry before checking its shape.
Wet fibres, elastic components and foam may dry in the position in which they are left. A twisted strap, rolled waistband or crushed cup can therefore become more difficult to correct after drying.
Reshape bras before positioning them to dry
After washing a bra:
- smooth the underband;
- straighten the side wings;
- untwist the straps;
- return adjustable straps to an even position;
- open the cups;
- restore the outline of moulded cups;
- unfold lace and lining;
- reposition removable padding;
- and check that the underwires remain correctly aligned.
Support a moulded cup from beneath or with the palm of the hand.
Do not:
- push sharply into a dent;
- pull opposite sides of the cup apart;
- fold one cup inside the other;
- or force the cup into a shape that differs from its original construction.

Reshape underwear before positioning it to dry
After washing underwear:
- open the garment fully;
- smooth the waistband without stretching it;
- flatten rolled leg openings;
- return the gusset and lining to their normal positions;
- separate layers that have folded together;
- and check that seams are not drying in a twisted position.
Period underwear and other absorbent garments require particular attention because the gusset may contain several layers with different drying rates.
Natural drying depends on support and airflow
Natural drying uses the surrounding environment rather than an integrated heated-drying programme.
It may include:
- line drying;
- rack drying;
- flat drying;
- drip drying;
- or a combination specified by the care label.
Natural drying is often the lower-risk starting point for garments containing elastic, foam, delicate lace or structured cups, but it is not automatically gentle.
A garment can still be damaged if it is:
- suspended from a weak area;
- stretched beyond its natural dimensions;
- folded while wet;
- pressed beneath other garments;
- left without airflow;
- exposed to direct high heat;
- or left damp for an extended period.
Natural drying removes moisture by allowing it to move from the textile into the surrounding air.
Choose a drying location that provides:
- clean support;
- space around the garment;
- suitable airflow;
- no contact with rust or dirt;
- no direct high heat;
- and protection from unnecessary compression.
Choose flat drying when the complete garment needs support
Flat drying distributes the wet garment’s weight across a larger surface.
It may be appropriate when:
- the care symbol specifies flat drying;
- the bra contains moulded or heavily padded cups;
- the garment becomes relatively heavy when wet;
- elastic areas are easily stretched;
- removable pads need to retain a flat shape;
- or hanging would place excessive stress on one part.
Use:
- a clean drying mesh;
- a clean, dry, colourfast towel;
- or another suitable breathable surface.
Arrange the garment in its natural shape.
Do not leave:
- one cup folded beneath another;
- straps trapped under wet foam;
- an absorbent gusset folded against itself;
- or a thick waistband pressed against a non-breathable surface.
If a towel beneath the garment becomes saturated, replace it with a dry towel.
Turn or reposition thick garments when necessary so that the underside also receives airflow.
Flat drying does not mean placing the garment flat on:
- a radiator;
- heated floor;
- boiler;
- hot appliance;
- or dirty surface.
Support the wet weight of a bra correctly
A wet bra should not hang from the smallest and most elastic parts of its structure.
Drying a bra flat
Flat drying can be appropriate for:
- moulded bras;
- heavily padded bras;
- bras with delicate straps;
- bras that become heavy when wet;
- and bras whose care labels specify flat drying.
Keep the cups open and supported.
Do not nest one moulded cup inside the other.
Keep the band and straps open rather than trapped beneath the wet cups.
Supporting a bra across a drying rack
When the care label permits line or rack drying, a bra may be supported across a clean rack so that its wet weight is distributed through the centre or underband area.
The bra should remain balanced rather than hanging mainly from:
- one strap;
- one hook;
- one cup edge;
- or one narrow section of elastic.
Check that the rack does not form a sharp fold through:
- a moulded cup;
- fixed padding;
- an underwire channel;
- or a bonded seam.
Leave enough space around the bra. Do not force it between heavy wet garments.
Avoid hanging a wet bra from the shoulder straps
Shoulder straps contribute to fit and support during wear. They are not necessarily designed to carry the full weight of a saturated bra for several hours.
Hanging a wet bra from one or both straps may:
- stretch the straps;
- pull on the attachment points;
- create uneven strap lengths;
- change the relationship between the straps and band;
- and allow the bra to dry asymmetrically.
Do not place clothes pegs on:
- narrow elastic straps;
- delicate lace;
- cup edges;
- or thin bonded sections.
Hang underwear without stretching the elastic
Many ordinary briefs can be line-dried when the care label permits it.
Before hanging:
- open the garment fully;
- smooth the waistband;
- untwist the leg openings;
- flatten the gusset;
- and separate folded layers.
Where clothes pegs are used, position them on suitable, structurally stable areas such as:
- side seams;
- reinforced edges;
- or appropriate sections of the waistband.
Avoid:
- hanging the garment from one small corner;
- stretching the waistband across an oversized rack;
- clipping pegs onto delicate lace edges;
- allowing the gusset to remain folded;
- or hanging heavy absorbent underwear from one narrow point.
The garment should retain its natural width rather than being stretched to fit the available space.
Padding and absorbent layers may dry more slowly
The outside of a garment can feel dry while moisture remains inside.
This is especially relevant to:
- foam cups;
- fixed padding;
- removable pads;
- pad pockets;
- wide waistbands;
- lined gussets;
- period underwear;
- and bonded multilayer structures.
Fixed padding and moulded cups
Restore fixed padding and moulded cups before drying.
Keep each cup:
- open;
- supported;
- uncompressed;
- and away from heavier wet items.
During drying, check whether water remains:
- at the lower edge of the cup;
- between foam and lining;
- along the cup seam;
- or around the underwire channel.
Reposition the bra when one side is drying more slowly than the other.
Removable pads
When the product instructions permit or require removal:
- take the pads out before drying;
- return them to their intended shape;
- keep them flat;
- separate overlapping pads;
- and expose both sides to airflow.
Do not:
- roll them;
- sharply fold them;
- stack them while wet;
- or hang them from one narrow edge.
Do not return the pads to the garment until:
- the pads are dry;
- the pad pockets are dry;
- and the surrounding seams are dry.
Period underwear and other absorbent garments
Absorbent underwear may contain:
- a surface layer;
- an absorbent core;
- a moisture-distribution layer;
- a leak-resistant layer;
- bonded sections;
- and elastic edges.
These layers do not necessarily dry at the same rate.
Follow the product instructions and keep the gusset exposed to airflow.
Turn or reposition the garment when necessary.
Do not judge dryness only by touching:
- the waistband;
- the outer back panel;
- or the surface fabric.

Avoid direct heat and prolonged strong sunlight
Direct contact with a heat source can create local temperatures that are difficult to control.
Do not dry bras and underwear:
- directly on a radiator;
- against a space heater;
- on a boiler;
- beneath a high-heat lamp;
- with a hot hair dryer;
- or on another heated appliance.
Localised heat may affect:
- elastane;
- elastic bands;
- foam;
- bonded seams;
- prints;
- dyes;
- and surface finishes.
Moderate ambient warmth is not the same as placing a garment against a hot surface. Airflow in a reasonably warm room is easier to control than direct contact heat.
Strong sunlight is also not automatically the best drying method.
Visible light and ultraviolet radiation can contribute to:
- fading;
- colour changes;
- yellowing;
- and weakening of textile fibres over time.
This is particularly relevant to:
- silk;
- dark colours;
- saturated colours;
- lace;
- prints;
- and repeatedly exposed elastic components.
When the care symbol specifies shade drying, keep the garment out of direct sunlight.
Even where no shade symbol appears, a coloured or delicate garment should not remain in intense sunlight for longer than necessary.
Shade must still provide airflow. Moving a garment into a dark but closed and humid room may protect its colour while preventing it from drying properly.

Heated drying works differently in impeller and drum machines
A genuine heated-drying process normally combines:
- heat;
- garment movement;
- programme time;
- and a way to remove or manage moisture.
However, not all machines move garments in the same way.
In this article:
- an impeller or pulsator washer means the upright-basket design commonly found in top-loading and tabletop machines—often described more simply as a wave-wheel-style washer;
- a drum washer-dryer or tumble dryer means a machine in which a horizontal or slightly inclined drum lifts and releases the garments as it rotates.
Both designs can be engineered to provide heated drying. The difference is not simply whether an inner basket rotates. The more important difference is how the garments move inside it.
Heated drying in an impeller or pulsator washer
An impeller or pulsator washer can provide genuine heated drying when the appliance has been designed with:
- a heat source;
- a heat-compatible inner basket and surrounding structure;
- controlled basket movement;
- sufficient programme time;
- temperature control;
- and a method of managing the moisture released from the garments.
Heat helps moisture evaporate from the textile.
The upright inner basket can rotate to:
- change the position of the garments;
- expose different surfaces to the heated environment;
- reduce the amount of time the complete load remains static;
- and help redistribute parts of the load.
The garments do not necessarily follow the repeated high lift-and-drop path associated with a horizontal tumble dryer.
Depending on the equipment design, they may:
- move around the upright basket;
- shift between the base and side wall;
- loosen and redistribute during changes in basket movement;
- and expose different surfaces to the heated environment over time.
The exact:
- basket speed;
- direction changes;
- airflow path;
- heating method;
- and moisture-management system
depend on the individual appliance.
Tumble drying in a drum
A conventional drum washer-dryer or separate tumble dryer normally uses a horizontal or slightly inclined rotating drum.
Internal lifters raise the garments. Gravity then causes them to fall and turn through the drum.
This repeated lift-and-drop movement:
- separates different parts of the load;
- exposes changing fabric surfaces;
- allows heated or dehumidified air to move through the garments;
- and helps moisture leave fibres and internal layers.
Moisture may then be:
- carried away with exhaust air;
- condensed and collected;
- or removed through a heat-pump circuit.
This process may dry garments effectively, but it also exposes them to:
- repeated tumbling;
- contact with the drum;
- compression from other garments;
- heat;
- pressure on moulded cups;
- and stress on elastic, foam and bonded components.
The two drying movements are not mechanically identical
An impeller heated-drying process should not be described as mechanically identical to drum tumble drying simply because both machines rotate an inner basket or drum.
The principal movements differ:
- drum tumble drying repeatedly lifts and drops the garments;
- impeller heated drying rotates and repositions garments within an upright basket.
Both may use:
- heat;
- basket movement;
- airflow;
- and programme time.
However, their:
- garment trajectories;
- compression patterns;
- contact points;
- airflow paths;
- and mechanical stresses
may differ.
This distinction matters for structured bras, padding, elastic and multilayer underwear.
Air drying, spin drying and heated drying are not the same process
Appliance terminology is not always consistent.
Terms such as:
- “air dry”;
- “super air dry”;
- “spin dryer”;
- “wind dry”;
- and “dry”
may describe different processes on different products.
Some machines use a high-speed spin and increased airflow to remove more free water. This can shorten the natural-drying time that follows, but it is different from an integrated heated-drying programme.
Spin or air-assisted extraction
Spin or air-assisted extraction primarily removes free water through:
- rapid basket rotation;
- centrifugal action;
- and, in some designs, increased ambient-air movement.
The garment normally requires further natural or machine drying.
Heated drying
Heated drying continues moisture removal through a designed combination of:
- heat;
- garment movement;
- programme time;
- and moisture management.
The process goes beyond centrifugal water extraction.
A programme name alone should therefore not be used to decide what the appliance actually does.
How VELARA’s Aura Petite separates spinning from heated drying
VELARA’s Aura Petite provides four separate programmes:
- Standard;
- 90°C Hygiene Wash;
- Dry;
- and Spin.
Spin extraction and heated drying are treated as separate functions.
Spinning within the washing programmes
The Standard and 90°C Hygiene Wash programmes both include:
- 150 seconds of powered continuous spinning;
- followed by 10 seconds during which the inner basket continues to slow under its own inertia.
This stage reduces the free water retained after washing.
It should not be described as complete drying, because moisture may still remain in:
- fibres;
- seams;
- padding;
- cups;
- gussets;
- elastic;
- and multilayer structures.
Aura Petite also provides Spin as a separate programme when spin extraction is required independently from a complete washing programme.
The separate 70°C heated-drying programme
The Dry programme is a separate machine function.
It:
- uses heat;
- has a 70°C setpoint;
- and rotates the inner basket while continuing the moisture-removal process.
The Dry programme should therefore not be described as:
- an extended spin;
- an unheated air-drying function;
- wind-assisted extraction;
- or a detachable spin-dry basket.
The 70°C figure refers to the programme setpoint.
It does not mean that:
- every fibre remains at exactly 70°C;
- every internal layer reaches the same temperature;
- or every garment is automatically suitable for the process.
Why the stainless-steel inner basket matters
Many earlier portable mini washers were designed as general-purpose appliances for mixed small-item laundry, such as:
- socks;
- everyday underwear;
- baby bibs;
- small towels;
- washcloths;
- and other compact garments or household textiles.
Many of these products were designed around:
- lightweight plastic washing tubs;
- flexible collapsible tubs;
- simple drainage;
- compact storage;
- and, where provided, a separate plastic spin basket.
They were generally designed primarily to wash small loads and remove free water. Their material selection and complete appliance architecture were not necessarily intended for sustained integrated heated drying.
A genuine heated-drying system requires more than a motor and a rotating basket.
The appliance must be engineered to manage:
- repeated heating;
- warm, damp garments;
- structural stability;
- temperature control;
- moisture;
- electrical safety;
- basket movement;
- and the path through which water vapour is handled.
Aura Petite’s stainless-steel inner basket is an important engineering foundation for this system.
It provides a more appropriate working structure for a programme that combines:
- a 70°C drying setpoint;
- heated moisture removal;
- rotating-basket movement;
- and repeated contact with warm, damp garments.
The stainless-steel basket does not create the drying function by itself.
The complete system also depends on:
- the heating architecture;
- temperature control;
- basket movement;
- surrounding heat-compatible components;
- and moisture management.
The relevant boundary is therefore not simply:
plastic versus stainless steel.
It is:
a portable mini washer designed as a general-purpose appliance for mixed small-item laundry versus a dedicated lingerie washer engineered specifically around the material, structural and drying needs of bras, underwear and other lingerie items.

Machine drying still has garment limits
The presence of a stainless-steel basket and a heated-drying programme does not mean that every bra or pair of underwear should be placed in the Dry programme.
Compatibility still depends on:
- the care label;
- fibres;
- elastic components;
- foam;
- removable or fixed padding;
- bonded structures;
- prints;
- dyes;
- garment thickness;
- load size;
- and the required final dryness.
Where the garment instructions do not clearly permit the proposed treatment, natural supported drying remains the lower-risk option.
A tumble-drying symbol does not describe every machine-drying design
The standard care-label symbol with a circle inside a square refers specifically to tumble drying.
An impeller washer’s heated-drying process is not mechanically identical to tumble drying.
This does not mean that a garment marked “do not tumble dry” is automatically suitable for every non-tumble heated programme.
The absence of tumble movement does not remove other possible risks, such as:
- heat;
- basket rotation;
- compression;
- foam distortion;
- elastic degradation;
- colour change;
- or damage to bonded structures.
Care labels do not necessarily describe every appliance-specific drying technology in detail.
The correct question is therefore not only:
Is this technically tumble drying?
It is also:
Can the complete garment tolerate the actual heat, movement, time and load conditions used by this programme?

Make sure every layer is completely dry
Bras and underwear should be completely dry before they are:
- worn;
- folded;
- stacked;
- placed in a drawer;
- or returned to a closed storage container.
Moisture may remain in:
- foam padding;
- removable pads;
- underbands;
- wide waistbands;
- gussets;
- pad pockets;
- underwire channels;
- folded elastic;
- bonded seams;
- and areas where several layers overlap.
Do not consider a garment completely dry only because its outer surface feels dry.
Check the thickest and least ventilated sections.
A section that remains:
- cooler than the surrounding fabric;
- heavier;
- softer with retained moisture;
- or slightly damp
requires more drying time.
Return the garment to the drying position, reopen folded sections and improve airflow.
Do not use fragrance to cover a damp or musty smell.
Common drying mistakes
Practices that can increase the risk of damage include:
- assuming that washing and drying have the same care permission;
- using the strongest spin automatically;
- twisting or wringing garments;
- lifting a wet bra by one strap;
- hanging the full wet weight of a bra from its shoulder straps;
- pegging delicate lace or narrow elastic;
- drying a moulded bra while the cups remain crushed;
- folding one moulded cup inside the other;
- leaving removable pads rolled or overlapping;
- drying padded bras beneath heavier laundry;
- stretching underwear across an oversized rack;
- leaving the gusset folded;
- placing garments directly on a radiator;
- using a hot hair dryer;
- leaving coloured or delicate garments in prolonged strong sunlight;
- drying laundry in a closed, humid space;
- stacking wet garments together;
- assuming “air dry” always means heated drying;
- assuming “dry” always means tumble drying;
- treating spin extraction as complete drying;
- assuming that a stainless-steel basket makes every garment machine-dryable;
- judging dryness only from the outer fabric;
- and storing padding or absorbent layers while they remain damp.
Avoiding one mistake does not compensate for another.
For example:
- flat drying will not protect a garment placed directly on a radiator;
- shade drying will not work properly when the garment remains folded without airflow;
- and a controlled heated-drying programme cannot protect a garment whose materials are incompatible with its heat and movement.
A practical drying routine
After washing a bra or pair of underwear:
- Read the complete drying label.
Identify the permitted natural- or machine-drying process separately from the washing instructions. - Check the garment construction.
Look for cups, foam, elastic, bonded seams, absorbent layers, underwires and colour-sensitive details. - Use a compatible spin process where permitted.
Remove free water without automatically choosing the most intensive setting. - Remove the garment promptly.
Do not leave it compressed inside the basin or machine. - Support the wet garment.
Lift a bra with both hands rather than by one strap or cup edge. - Do not twist or wring.
Use gentle towel pressure when additional water needs to be removed. - Open the garment fully.
Separate folded layers and untwist straps, waistbands and leg openings. - Reshape it while damp.
Smooth seams, restore cups and return elastic areas to their natural positions. - Remove pads when instructed.
Keep removable pads flat and expose both sides to airflow. - Choose natural or machine drying deliberately.
Do not rely on a programme name alone. - Choose the correct natural-drying position.
Lay the garment flat or hang it only where the care label and structure permit. - Distribute the wet weight.
Do not suspend a heavy wet bra from one narrow point. - Keep structured areas open.
Do not fold or crush moulded cups and fixed padding. - Provide airflow.
Leave space around the garment and turn thick areas when necessary. - Avoid uncontrolled direct heat.
Keep the garment away from radiators, heaters and hot appliances. - Limit prolonged strong sunlight.
Follow shade instructions and protect delicate colours and fibres. - Use machine drying only after checking compatibility.
Consider the actual heat, movement, programme time and load—not only whether the process is called “dry”. - Check the slowest-drying areas.
Inspect padding, gussets, waistbands, seams, pad pockets and underwire channels. - Allow more time when necessary.
Reposition the garment rather than storing it slightly damp. - Store only when the complete garment is dry.
Maintain the shape established during drying.
The most useful rule
Dry bras and underwear with enough water removed to make the process practical, enough support to preserve their shape, enough airflow or controlled machine action to remove the remaining moisture, and no more heat or mechanical stress than the complete garment can tolerate.
Drying is complete only when:
- the garment retains its intended shape;
- the materials have remained within their care boundary;
- and every internal layer is dry.
